Car Rental Costs in Seychelles 2026
Seychelles is not a budget destination. This is a country where a bottle of water costs 30 SCR (about 2 USD) and a basic hotel room starts at 100 EUR per night. Car rental follows the same expensive pattern — daily rates are higher than mainland Africa or most of Asia, and the options for cost-cutting are limited by the simple fact that there are only a handful of agencies on each island operating with small fleets.
That said, a rental car in Seychelles is one of the better value propositions available on these islands. A week of car rental costs roughly the same as four or five taxi rides between popular destinations. We calculated our savings on the first trip: seven days of rental at 50 EUR/day came to 350 EUR, while the equivalent taxi rides for our planned activities would have totaled over 500 EUR. The car was not just more convenient — it was actually cheaper. And that calculation does not include the spontaneous stops, the off-schedule beach detours, and the freedom to leave a restaurant when you choose rather than when the taxi arrives.
Daily Rental Rates by Car Class
Prices for 2026, based on pre-booked rentals on Mahe. Praslin rates are typically 10-15% higher due to smaller fleet sizes.
| Car Class | Examples | Low Season (May-Jun, Sep-Oct) | Shoulder (Mar-Apr, Nov) | High Season (Dec-Jan, Jul-Aug) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | Hyundai i10, Suzuki Alto | 35-45 EUR/day | 40-55 EUR/day | 50-70 EUR/day |
| Compact | Hyundai i20, Toyota Yaris | 40-55 EUR/day | 50-65 EUR/day | 60-80 EUR/day |
| Sedan | Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent | 50-65 EUR/day | 55-75 EUR/day | 65-90 EUR/day |
| SUV/Crossover | Suzuki Vitara, Hyundai Tucson | 60-80 EUR/day | 70-95 EUR/day | 85-120 EUR/day |
| Minivan | Toyota Innova | 75-100 EUR/day | 85-115 EUR/day | 100-140 EUR/day |
Notes on pricing:
- These are direct-book rates from established agencies. Aggregator sites may show lower but read the fine print on excess amounts and included coverage.
- Weekly discounts of 10-15% are common when booking 7+ days — always ask.
- Automatic transmission adds 5-10 EUR/day to any class.
- Praslin rates are typically 10-15% higher than Mahe for the same class due to smaller fleet and higher operating costs.
- International franchise names (Avis, Hertz) are typically 10-20% more expensive than quality local operators.
Rate comparison by booking type:
| Booking Method | Economy 7-day (Mahe) | Benefits | Cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct with local agency | 245-315 EUR | Best price, personal service, flexible terms | Variable vehicle quality |
| International franchise | 385-595 EUR | Standardized service, newer fleet | Higher price |
| Aggregator site (advertised) | 210-280 EUR | Lowest headline price | Read terms; excess levels may differ |
Seasonal Pricing Patterns
Understanding the seasonal structure helps you plan and budget:
| Season | Period | Economy Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| High season (peak) | Dec 22 - Jan 3 | 65-75 EUR/day | Christmas/New Year; book 6-8 weeks ahead |
| High season (summer) | Jul 15 - Aug 20 | 55-70 EUR/day | European summer holidays |
| Shoulder season | Mar-Apr, Nov | 40-55 EUR/day | Good weather, reasonable rates |
| Low season | May-Jun, Sep-Oct | 35-45 EUR/day | Lowest rates; some trade winds roughen the sea |
The low season in Seychelles is characterized by stronger southeast trade winds (May-October), which creates rougher seas on some west-facing beaches. The east coast beaches (Beau Vallon, Anse Royale) remain calm. For beach-focused trips, May-June is better than August for wind conditions; September-October is excellent.
Month-by-Month Pricing and Conditions
| Month | Economy Rate | Sea Conditions | Rental Availability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 65-75 EUR/day | Calm northwest season | Limited (peak season) | Book 8+ weeks ahead |
| February | 55-70 EUR/day | Calm, ideal | Better than Jan | Post-peak, still busy |
| March | 40-55 EUR/day | Transitional | Good availability | Excellent value window |
| April | 40-55 EUR/day | Transitional | Good availability | Some rough days possible |
| May | 35-45 EUR/day | SE trades begin, rougher west | Good availability | Best value month |
| June | 35-45 EUR/day | SE trades, rough west coast | Very good | Low season benefits |
| July | 55-70 EUR/day | SE trades | Moderate demand | European holiday spike |
| August | 55-70 EUR/day | SE trades, rough | Demand building | Book 4-6 weeks ahead |
| September | 35-45 EUR/day | Transitional | Excellent | Best overall value |
| October | 40-50 EUR/day | Calming, very good | Good | Strong shoulder value |
| November | 40-55 EUR/day | Calm, excellent | Good | Pre-peak quality |
| December | 60-75 EUR/day | Calm northwest season | Tight (peak) | Book very early |
Total Trip Cost Estimate
A realistic budget for a one-week Mahe car rental:
| Expense | 7-Day Estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car rental (economy, pre-booked) | 280-400 EUR | Including basic insurance |
| Fuel | 30-50 EUR | Mahe loop is 65 km; fuel use is minimal |
| Parking | 0 EUR | No paid parking anywhere in Seychelles |
| Insurance deposit (held on card) | 300-500 EUR | Refunded after return in good condition |
| Total out-of-pocket car costs | 310-450 EUR | ~44-64 EUR/day |
Adding Praslin car rental (3 days): approximately 135-225 EUR, bringing the total two-island car budget to 445-675 EUR for 10 days.
Compare this to the alternative transport costs for the same week on Mahe:
| Transport Method | Estimated Weekly Cost | Flexibility | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car | 310-450 EUR | Complete freedom | Best value for beach-hopping |
| Taxis for equivalent trips | 500-700 EUR | Dependent on availability | Adds up very fast in Seychelles |
| Buses only | 50-70 EUR | Very limited routes | Cannot reach many beaches |
| Hotel shuttle + some taxis | 200-400 EUR | Dependent on hotel | Mixed convenience |
The rental car is the clear winner on both cost and convenience for any itinerary involving more than beach-hotel-beach.
Per-person calculation: For two people sharing costs, the 7-day car budget runs approximately 155-225 EUR each. For context, a single taxi from the airport to Beau Vallon costs 400-500 SCR (28-36 USD) one way.
Cost Breakdown for Common Seychelles Trip Lengths
| Trip Length | Mahe Only | Mahe + Praslin | Mahe + Praslin + La Digue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | 280-400 EUR | 370-520 EUR | 370-520 EUR (La Digue uses bicycles) |
| 10 days | 385-560 EUR | 500-710 EUR | 510-730 EUR |
| 14 days | 500-700 EUR | 620-860 EUR | 640-890 EUR |
Note: La Digue has no rental cars. Transportation there is bicycle (150-200 SCR/day) or walking. The inter-island ferry costs are separate from these car estimates.
Taxi vs. Car Comparison: Key Trips on Mahe
| Journey | Taxi Cost (one way) | Car Cost (fuel only, both ways) | Car Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport → Beau Vallon | 400-500 SCR ($28-36) | ~5 SCR fuel | Enormous |
| Beau Vallon → Anse Royale | 600-800 SCR ($42-57) | ~8 SCR fuel | Enormous |
| Victoria → Anse Intendance | 500-700 SCR ($36-50) | ~6 SCR fuel | Enormous |
| Victoria → Anse Lazio (Praslin by boat then taxi) | 2,000+ SCR ($140+) | Ferry + local car rental | Ferry + rental cheaper |
The numbers make the rental car case clearly. After two or three taxi rides from your hotel to distant beaches, the math has already swung decisively in favor of renting.
Insurance
Insurance in Seychelles is less complicated than in Europe:
| Coverage | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) | Included with most rentals | Standard protection for all agencies |
| Theft Protection | Included | Theft is extremely rare in Seychelles |
| Third-party liability | Included | Legally required |
| Excess (deductible) | 300-500 EUR | Held as deposit on credit card |
| Additional excess reduction | Sometimes available | 5-10 EUR/day; not offered by all agencies |
| Windshield/tire coverage | Rarely offered separately | Usually included in basic CDW |
The key number is the excess. If you damage the car, you pay up to this amount out of pocket. For most agencies in Seychelles, the excess is 300-500 EUR — lower than the European average, reflecting the lower speeds and simpler driving environment.
Damage probability in Seychelles:
The most likely damage scenarios and their relative frequency:
- Vegetation scrape on narrow road: Fairly common — the roads are genuinely narrow. Usually minor.
- Undercarriage scrape on beach track: Possible on steeper access roads. Check your rental’s off-road policy.
- Parking ding: Possible in Victoria’s tight parking areas.
- Serious accident: Very uncommon given the low speeds and light traffic.
The vegetation scrape reality: This is worth being specific about. Mahe’s mountain roads and some beach access tracks have overhanging vegetation that brushes car sides and mirrors. Most agencies are aware of this and the agreements reflect it — cosmetic vegetation scrapes are often treated differently from impact damage. Ask specifically about this when reviewing the rental agreement. Some agencies note “light vegetation scrapes excluded” in their terms.
Should you buy additional coverage?
- If your credit card provides rental car insurance: The card typically covers the excess as secondary insurance. Verify your card benefits and whether left-hand drive vehicles are covered (most policies do not exclude them, but check).
- If your travel insurance includes rental vehicle excess cover: Check the maximum excess level covered matches or exceeds the agency’s excess amount.
- If you have no other coverage: The 5-10 EUR/day excess reduction is reasonable peace of mind for a week in Seychelles.

Documentation Checklist at Pickup
Before you drive away from the rental agency:
- Photograph every panel, bumper, mirror, and roof from multiple angles
- Note every scratch, dent, and mark on the condition report form – insist on accuracy
- Confirm in writing what “vegetation scrape” treatment means under their policy
- Confirm the fuel level and policy (full-to-full is standard)
- Get the agency’s emergency phone number in your phone, not just on paper
This process takes 10-15 minutes and saves you from potential deposit disputes on return.
Fuel Costs
Fuel in Seychelles is more expensive than mainland Africa but comparable to European prices:
| Fuel Type | Price per Liter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol (unleaded) | 23-25 SCR (~1.65-1.80 USD) | Standard for most rental cars |
| Diesel | 22-24 SCR (~1.58-1.72 USD) | Less common in the Seychelles rental fleet |
Fuel consumption reality: The distances in Seychelles are so short that fuel is a genuinely minor expense regardless of prices. A full tank in an economy car (about 35-40 liters) costs approximately 850-1,000 SCR (61-72 USD) and will easily last 4-5 days of active island exploring on Mahe.
The coastal circuit of Mahe is 65 km total. An economy car uses 4-5 liters for that loop — about 115-125 SCR (8-9 USD). You are not going to spend significant money on fuel in Seychelles.
Fuel station locations on Mahe:
| Station Area | Location | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria (SEYPEC main) | Near clock tower, central | Mon-Sat 6:00-19:00 | Most reliable for airport return |
| Anse Royale | East coast, south sector | Mon-Sat 6:30-18:30 | Good for south Mahe driving |
| Beau Vallon area | North coast | Mon-Sat 6:00-19:00 | Convenient for north coast accommodation |
| Baie Lazare | Southwest coast | Mon-Sat 6:30-18:00 | Fill up before driving far south |
| Grand Anse | West coast | Mon-Sat 6:30-18:00 | Last fuel before south coast roads |
| Airport area | East coast, near terminal | Limited hours | Emergency only; higher price |
On Praslin: Only 2-3 stations, concentrated near Grand Anse and Baie Ste Anne. Fill up whenever you pass one — do not wait until you need it.
Fuel station tips:
- Sunday hours are reduced or non-existent at some stations — fill up on Saturday if your tank is getting low
- Some stations close for lunch (12:00-13:00)
- Cash in SCR is always accepted; cards are accepted at most but not all stations, particularly the smaller ones
- The SEYPEC station near Victoria is the most reliable for card payments and longest hours
Fuel Planning for Return
The most stressful fuel moment is returning the car before a flight. Plan this carefully:
For airport returns: The SEYPEC station in Victoria is 7 km from the airport. If you return a full tank from there, you have enough margin for the drive without significant fuel drop. Alternatively, the Anse Royale station on the east coast road is approximately 15 km from the airport — convenient if you are coming from the south.
For ferry terminal returns: If returning your car at Victoria ferry terminal, the SEYPEC Victoria station is 1 km away. Straightforward.
Saturday evening departures: If your departure is early Sunday, Saturday afternoon is your last reliable chance to fill up at most stations. Plan accordingly.
The fuel calculation on Praslin: With only 2-3 stations on the entire island, fuel anxiety is understandable. The answer is simple: fill up every time you see a station with fuel to spare. The island is 45 km long and 12 km wide – the maximum driving you can do in a day is perhaps 100 km including detours. A full tank comfortably covers two days of Praslin exploration. Do not let it drop below half before looking for the next station.
Hidden Costs and Fees
| Potential Fee | Amount | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Airport pickup surcharge | 0-15 EUR | Some agencies include it; others charge. Ask when booking. |
| Late return | 15-30 EUR per hour | Return on time; confirm return time clearly at pickup |
| Fuel surcharge (not full) | Agency rate per liter (premium) | Return with same fuel level you received |
| Additional driver | 0-10 EUR/day | Many local agencies include one free; ask when booking |
| Baby/child seat | 5-10 EUR/day | Bring your own if traveling frequently with children |
| Damage excess | Up to 500 EUR | Document all existing damage at pickup with photos |
| Delivery fee (to hotel) | 0-20 EUR | Some agencies include delivery free; ask |
| Insurance excess reduction | 5-10 EUR/day | Optional; skip if your card/travel insurance covers it |
| Cleaning fee | 20-50 EUR | Return the car reasonably clean; do not bring sand inside |
| Inter-island coordination fee | 0-25 EUR | Some agencies charge for managing the multi-island return |
| Late booking surcharge | 10-20% | Book early; last-minute rates are higher |
The cleaning fee: This one surprises people. You are in Seychelles. You are going to beaches. You will get sand in the car. Most agencies have a “reasonably clean” standard — vacuuming out sand is expected and included. What attracts cleaning fees is excessive food debris, mud, or significantly soiled upholstery. Shaking out beach towels before getting in, and using a bag for sandy gear, keeps the interior acceptable.
The fuel surcharge is the most likely unnecessary cost. Because fuel stations have limited hours, plan your last fill-up carefully. If returning the car to the airport for an early morning flight, fill up the previous evening. The SEYPEC station in Victoria is open until 19:00.
The additional driver fee: If two people in your group share driving, the additional driver fee (0-10 EUR/day) adds up. Most local agencies in Seychelles include one additional driver free or charge a minimal flat fee rather than a daily rate. Ask specifically about this when booking — it is one of the few fees that is often negotiable with local operators.
Money-Saving Tips
Book directly with local agencies. In Seychelles, the local operators (Kreol Cars, Prestige, Cote d’Or Car Hire on Praslin) are typically cheaper than international franchise names (Avis, Hertz). Service quality is comparable or better — the personal touch of a small operation means more flexibility and genuine responsiveness when you need it.
Book early. This saves money in two ways: prices rise as availability drops, and the cheaper economy vehicles go first. Booking 4-6 weeks ahead typically gets you the best rate. Leaving it until the week before often means either higher prices or limited options.
Choose economy. The roads are narrow, the distances short, and the speeds low. An economy car does everything you need for driving in Seychelles. The upgrade to an SUV adds 20-40 EUR/day with minimal practical benefit unless you have a family of five or specific concerns about the Anse Lazio road.
Skip the GPS rental. If it is even offered (increasingly, it is not). Google Maps works perfectly well in Seychelles, and the road network is simple enough that you could navigate with a paper map. Download offline maps for Mahe and Praslin before your trip.
Negotiate for longer rentals. When booking directly with local agencies, asking for a weekly rate often yields a 10-15% discount over the per-day rate multiplied by seven. “What is your best price for seven days?” is a perfectly reasonable question that usually gets a positive response.
Use buses for simple routes. SPTC buses on Mahe cost 7 SCR per ride — effectively free. The Victoria to Beau Vallon route runs regularly. If your accommodation is near a bus route and you are spending a day at Beau Vallon without plans to explore further, leave the car parked and take the bus. The small saving adds up.
Avoid holiday peak weeks. The most expensive rental periods are Christmas to New Year (December 22 to January 3 approximately) and the core European summer (July 15 to August 15 approximately). Even shifting by a week on either side can reduce rates by 15-25%.
Consider the ferry instead of flying between islands. The Cat Cocos ferry from Mahe to Praslin costs 940 SCR one way — approximately 68 USD. The domestic flight costs 2,500-3,500 SCR (180-250 USD). The ferry takes an hour and the experience is pleasant. Unless time is genuinely critical, the ferry saves money that can go toward an extra day of rental.
Ask about delivery to reduce airport surcharges. If the agency charges an airport pickup surcharge (some do), having the car delivered to your first hotel after you take a taxi there can be cheaper overall. Compare (taxi cost from airport + delivery fee) against (airport pickup price including surcharge). Sometimes hotel delivery is cheaper.
Don’t bother with a sunroof or convertible premium. The convertible jeep experience sounds appealing, but Seychelles is extremely hot midday, and driving with the top down in direct equatorial sun is less pleasant than it sounds in a temperate climate country’s travel magazine. The standard air-conditioned economy car is more comfortable for actual driving.
Choose May, September, or October. These three months combine the best value (low-to-shoulder season rates), excellent sea conditions (transitional or calm), and manageable tourist levels. May and September are particularly good: the worst of the trade wind rough sea is either ending or yet to begin, hotels and restaurants are less crowded, and rental rates are 20-35% below peak.
Payment Methods
| Method | Accepted For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card (Visa/Mastercard) | Deposit hold, rental payment | Preferred by most agencies |
| Cash (EUR) | Rental payment | Accepted by most local agencies; useful to have |
| Cash (USD) | Rental payment | Accepted but EUR sometimes preferred |
| Cash (SCR) | Rental payment, fuel, incidentals | Always accepted everywhere |
| Debit card | Rarely for deposits | Some agencies accept with cash supplement |
Currency tips:
The Seychellois Rupee (SCR) is the local currency. The exchange rate as of 2026 is approximately 1 USD = 14 SCR, or 1 EUR = 15 SCR. EUR and USD are widely accepted, but the exchange rate applied by rental agencies for rental payments in foreign currency is set by the agency and may not be favorable.
For the best rate:
- Use SCR for fuel (bureau de change or airport ATM before you travel)
- Use your credit card for the rental deposit
- Pay the rental fee itself in SCR or with a card that has no foreign transaction fees
ATMs: Available at the airport, in Victoria, and at a few locations around Mahe. Outside Victoria, ATM availability drops significantly. Withdraw cash for fuel and incidentals before heading to the remote parts of the island.
Currency exchange: The airport has exchange desks open for international flight arrivals. Rates are acceptable. Banks in Victoria offer similar rates. Avoid exchanging at hotels, which typically offer the worst rates. SCR is not widely available outside Seychelles, so exchange any remaining SCR before your departure.
Credit Card Foreign Transaction Fees
Given that most car rental transactions will be charged in SCR or EUR, if your credit card charges foreign transaction fees (typically 1-3%), these add up over a week’s rental. A card with no foreign transaction fees — common among travel-focused cards — saves 7-20 EUR on a typical Seychelles rental.
If your deposit is 400 EUR blocked on your card, and your rental is 350 EUR charged, using a 2% foreign transaction fee card adds 14 EUR versus a no-fee card. Over a full trip with various expenses, the savings from a no-fee card are meaningful.
Seychelles vs. Other Indian Ocean Island Destinations
| Factor | Seychelles | Mauritius | Reunion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy daily rate | 40-60 EUR | 20-35 EUR | 25-40 EUR |
| Fuel per liter | ~1.70 USD | ~1.40 USD | ~1.80 USD |
| Road quality | Good but narrow | Good, wider roads | Good, mountainous |
| Driving side | Left | Left | Right |
| Fleet availability | Limited | Good | Good |
| Parking costs | Free everywhere | Mostly free | Mostly free |
| IDP required | No | No (EU/UK/US) | No |
| Rental market | Local operators | Mix of local and international | International chains common |
| Island size (driving distance) | 65 km circuit | 200+ km | 200+ km |
| Inter-island car use | Not possible | N/A (one main island) | N/A |
Seychelles is the most expensive of the three Indian Ocean island destinations for car rental, but it is also the most unique in terms of scenery and beach quality. The premium is real but so is the experience.
Mauritius vs. Seychelles for driving: Mauritius has a larger road network (better for road trip mentality), wider roads, more fuel stations, and significantly cheaper car rental. If budget is a primary factor and you want more driving variety, Mauritius delivers more road trip value per euro.
Reunion for drivers: Reunion is a French overseas territory with French-standard roads, right-hand traffic, and more dramatic mountain scenery than either Seychelles or Mauritius. The circular road around the island and the routes into the three ancient caldera are genuinely spectacular drives. Car rental is cheaper than Seychelles, and the island has better fuel coverage.
Deposit Amounts by Vehicle Class
| Car Class | Typical Deposit (Mahe) | Praslin Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 300-400 EUR | +10-15% |
| Compact/Sedan | 350-500 EUR | +10-15% |
| SUV | 450-600 EUR | +10-20% |
| Minivan | 500-700 EUR | +15-20% |
The deposit is a hold on your credit card, not an actual charge. It reduces your available credit for the duration of the rental. Ensure your card has sufficient headroom above the deposit amount for your trip expenses.
